It takes a village. And then some.
We often hear that it takes a village to raise a child, but we rarely talk about the village required to heal an adult. When you are navigating the heavy, layered realities of physical pain, challenging life transitions, or deep-seated shame, a single approach is rarely enough. True healing requires an interdisciplinary team; a network of providers who understand that the mind and the body are not separate entities, but a highly sensitive, interconnected system.
This vital mind-body connection was at the forefront of my thoughts recently during a modality trade with Emily, the practitioner behind Candor Body Work. In the therapy room, when we work to process deep trauma or dismantle shame using modalities like Brainspotting or Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, we are constantly tracking the nervous system. But sitting down with Emily reinforced exactly why mental health support is amplified when paired with dedicated physical and somatic bodywork.
During our time together, Emily generously shared her own healing journey. She described how navigating chronic illness profoundly impacted her life, ultimately leading her down a path of seeking support not just for her physical symptoms, but for her mental health as well. Her personal health needs eventually guided her to craniosacral therapy; a modality that provided such profound relief and transformation that she trained to become a provider herself.
As she discussed the power of craniosacral therapy, Emily completely lit up. She explained a concept that is universally experienced but rarely named: bracing patterns.
Throughout our lives, our bodies learn how to hold themselves to brace for danger, anticipate pain, or protect us from harm. These physical stances are brilliant survival mechanisms in the moment. However, these bracing patterns often persist long after we have fled the danger. Even when the trigger is years in the past, the body remains locked in a protective state, creating a cascade of chronic pain, physical dysfunction, and nervous system dysregulation. You cannot simply talk your way out of a bracing pattern; the tissue itself needs to feel safe enough to let go.
Emily explained how craniosacral therapy, alongside other somatic healing modalities, can help "free up" these deeply ingrained bracing patterns. By gently engaging with the body's natural rhythms, the therapy allows the nervous system to finally recognize that the threat has passed, giving the body the space it needs to rewire and find a new, sustainable balance.
This is why an interdisciplinary team is so crucial. A therapist can help you process the narrative and the emotional weight of a trauma, while a skilled bodyworker, like Emily, can help your physical tissues release the physical memory of it. Together, the village addresses the whole person.
If there is one thing Emily wants people to know about her practice at Candor Body Work, it is this: We live in a world that constantly requires us to mask—to hide our pain, our neurodivergence, our fatigue, and our true selves just to get through the day. The time you give yourself in her space is a time where you get to drop that mask. It is a place where you are free to simply be you.
You get to come exactly as you are, and all the parts of you are welcome.
Ready to Build your care team?
Healing doesn't have to mean years of narrating your pain without feeling any relief. If you are ready to move past your shame beliefs and step into true self-compassion, an intensive approach can help you finally move forward. My goal as a therapist is truly for my clients to eventually not feel like they need regular therapy. Like they have everything in place to manage wherever they are at in life without the aid of a mental health provider. Of course, life happens, and we may find we ebb and flow in and out of therapy. But if you feel you can’t get through your week without talk therapy, that’s what we need to target!
