I Tried Talk Therapy for Years. Here's What Finally Helped.

If you are reading this, it’s possible you’re not feeling your best; and it’s possible your sick of your own shit. It’s a hard place to be. In my humble opinion, it’s even harder when you know yourself, you’re aware of your patterns but you find you’re living and re-living some sort of groundhog day, but not in a cute way.

For many deep thinkers, and those struggling with entrenched patterns, traditional talk therapy can sometimes feel like running on a hamster wheel. You might feel exhausted by the idea of starting the talk therapy process all over again, or perhaps you are carrying deep-seated shame beliefs that intellectualizing just hasn't fixed. You want to build genuine self-compassion, but your brain seems like its reached its limit.

When insight alone isn't enough to create change, a therapy intensive can be the breakthrough you need.

What is a Therapy Intensive?

A standard therapy session typically lasts 50 minutes. By the time you settle in, unpack the events of your week, and begin to dive into the deeper emotional work, it is often time to wrap up.

A therapy intensive breaks this mold. It is an extended session, anything longer than 60 minutes, but generally lasting between 2 to 3 hours, depending on your specific goals and the modalities we use. This dedicated block of time provides a safe, expansive container to drop beneath the surface layer of the mind without the pressure of a ticking clock.

The Magic of KAP and Brainspotting

In my practice, I utilize Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) paired with Brainspotting integration sessions during these intensives. Here is why this specific combination is so powerful for clients who feel blocked:

Bypassing the Intellectual Mind

Talk therapy relies heavily on the conscious, analytical brain. If you are highly self-aware, this is the same part of the brain you use to intellectualize your feelings and unintentionally avoid actually experiencing them. Brainspotting operates on the premise that "where you look affects how you feel," allowing us to access the subcortical brain where trauma, shame, and emotional pain are stored. It helps release what talk therapy simply can't reach.

Creating Neuroplasticity for Deep Healing

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy temporarily softens the ego's defenses and increases neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections. When you are fearful of exploring your inner world or facing shame, KAP can provide a sense of safety and openness. It allows you to look at deeply entrenched beliefs from a new, compassionate vantage point.

Powerful Integration

The true transformation happens when these two modalities meet. We use the extended time of an intensive not just for the KAP experience itself, but for deep Brainspotting integration. We take the raw, expansive insights gained during the ketamine experience and immediately help your brain process and anchor them into your nervous system.

The Benefits of an Intensive Approach

  • Accelerated Progress: A 2-to-3-hour intensive can often accomplish what might take months of standard weekly sessions. We avoid the constant starting and stopping of the more traditional 50-minute session.

  • Relief from the "Talk" Requirement: If you are fearful of or exhausted by having to explain your most painful experiences, Brainspotting and KAP allow your brain and body to do the healing work with minimal talking required.

  • Space for True Self-Compassion: Without your typical intellectual defenses standing in the way, you finally have the energetic bandwidth to replace chronic shame with genuine, lasting self-compassion.

Ready to Break the Cycle?

Healing doesn't have to mean years of narrating your pain without feeling any relief. If you are ready to move past your shame beliefs and step into true self-compassion, an intensive approach can help you finally move forward. My goal as a therapist is truly for my clients to eventually not feel like they need regular therapy. Like they have everything in place to manage wherever they are at in life without the aid of a mental health provider. Of course, life happens, and we may find we ebb and flow in and out of therapy. But if you feel you can’t get through your week without talk therapy, that’s what we need to target!
